Theatre

The Greenhouse Ensemble’s roots have always grown from theatre. This tremendous artform is capable of presenting one masterpiece upon another masterpiece, upon another masterpiece. Theatre’s collaborative nature is emblematic of The Greenhouse Ensemble. Our company’s core philosophy stems from theatre ethics- a deep respect for each artist’s role. By creating theatre in this way, we strive to produce or present work which will improve people’s lives.

10 Minute Play Soiree

The 10 minute play soiree is Greenhouse tradition. We ask for submissions from around the world and after reading through them all (hundreds), we choose our favorite 7-8 plays, and assign each to a director. Those directors work together for two months in our director roundtable, sharing resources and producing one cohesive production. It is a staple of Greenhouse and one of our favorite annual productions.

House of Yes

A haunting family portrait of a family obsessed with trauma and unable to decipher when to say no. This was an early Greenhouse production at our first long-term residency within The Franciscan Community Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Twelfth Night

Our first production out of the pandemic. This was a celebration of theater and our first outdoor production. The production was nominated for Best Comedy from the New York Shakespeare Awards and a documentary was made in honor of our work.

Muse

The third production of Frank Tangredi at Greenhouse. This was an heart-tearing drama about two families forced to meet after their children are involved in a tragedy. Frank’s work weaves the present, past, and memory into a play designed to test our capacity for forgiveness and understanding.

Dads, Dates and Other Disturbances

From the beginning of our working relationship with Frank Tangredi, we had always spoken about a production featuring all of his short plays. This was an epic production featuring 6 short plays and 4 short films. The second mainstage production following the success of God, Sex and Getting Even.

Captain Placeholder

A no-holds-barred production with fake beards, real magic gemstones, superhero healing abilities with agility, and two writers disatisfied with their jobs.

Fahrenheit 451

During a resurgence of book burning in the United States (Fahrenheit 451 was banned in several states’ libraries), we staged this classic as a cautionary tale to remind people just how slippery a slope censorship can be.

A Painted Window

After directing 44th and 9th, which became Daddio (starring Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson), Christy Hall went to work on another play, A Painted Window, about a wealthy woman who loses everything, is thrown out of her Madison Avenue mansion and into a rickety East Harlem studio.

Romeo and Juliet

Our first Shakespeare production and our first time producing inside of Theater 86’s home, Pushkin Hall (the subject of our documentary, The Battle for West Park).

Soup or Heroes

The original version of what would become an even more elaborate “Captain Placeholder and the Adventures of We’ll Figure it Out Later”. This was a more simplified superhero spectacle, commenting on the over-the-top cliche nature of the Superhero film era.

While You Wait

An experimental show and the third production of The Greenhouse Ensemble. Three people sit in an imaginary waiting room while their minds wander into new realities. The first collaboration between The Greenhouse Ensemble and James Meneses mixing surrealistic dialogue, modern dance, and performance art. Starring Keegan McDonald, Reanna Armellino, Mary Rawlins, and James Meneses. Directed by Spencer Scott. Set Design by Hazen Cuyler.

The Great Divide

Staged as a relaxed hang out amongst friends, political conversation sparks controverstial improv scenes. A wild and edgy show performed at Theater for the New City.

Danny and The deep Blue Sea

This was our second production following God, Sex and Getting Even. Much of the original Greenhouse Ensemble trained for years under Austin Pendleton. So it was fitting that he jumped in to direct this emotionally turbulent production.
